In a recent interview, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) mentor Gautam Gambhir chose Marcus Rashford as his favourite player over football icons Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. Rashford, who plays for Manchester United in the Premier League, hails from England.

Following this, the two-time IPL-winning captain Gambhir turned the tables on the interviewer, asking who the better player is between Ronaldo and Messi. Gambhir then selected Ronaldo as his choice.

KKR’s official Instagram account posted:

“Messi or Ronaldo, who’s a better player?” GG finally reveals.”

Ronaldo and Messi, both football icons, are perennially debated as to who is the superior player. They hold the records for the most goals in international (128 and 106) and top-tier professional football competitions (885 and 828), respectively.

Ronaldo has featured for prestigious clubs such as Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Juventus. At 39, he presently plays for Al Nassr in the Saudi Pro League and achieved victory in the 2016 Euro Cup with Portugal.

On the other hand, Messi has played for Barcelona and Paris St. Germain in European football. At 36, he now competes for Inter Miami in Major League Soccer. Messi clinched victory in the Copa America and the FIFA World Cup with Argentina in 2022.

Gautam Gambhir’s mentorship leads to a turnaround for KKR’s fortunes

Gautam Gambhir’s arrival as a mentor for KKR ahead of the 2024 season has sparked a transformation in the team’s performance. Winning four out of their initial six matches, the Knight Riders are positioned well in the points table, trailing only behind table-toppers Rajasthan Royals (RR).

During the IPL 2023 season, Kolkata failed to reach the playoffs despite securing six wins in eight matches, finishing seventh in the points table. KKR commenced the season strongly with three consecutive victories against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and Delhi Capitals.

Although they faced a defeat against Chennai Super Kings in their fourth match, they rebounded by triumphing over Lucknow Super Giants and RR in their final two games.

Furthermore, Gambhir’s decision to reinstate Sunil Narine as an opener has proven beneficial. The southpaw has accumulated 276 runs in six innings at a striking rate of 187.75, including one century and a half-century.

Shreyas Iyer’s team will face Royal Challengers Bengaluru at Eden Gardens on April 21. The Kolkata franchise is aiming for their third IPL title, following Gambhir’s leadership in securing titles in 2012 and 2014.
