South Africa pacer Marco Jansen pulled off a brilliant catch to help Lungi Ngidi pick up his third wicket, removing Tilak Varma in the opening T20I of the five-match series against India. The contest is taking place on Tuesday, December 9, at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack.

The wicket fell on the fourth delivery of the 12th over of India’s innings. Ngidi delivered a short-of-length ball, which Varma pulled toward fine leg. Jansen, moving backward with the momentum, stayed inside the boundary cushion and completed a superb take, his third catch of the match.

The left-hander had a tough day in the middle, scoring just 26 from 32 deliveries, which included two boundaries and a six. His departure pushed the Men in Blue to 78/4 after 11.4 overs.

Lungi Ngidi keeps India under pressure with consistent breakthroughs in 1st T20I

India, asked to bat first, got off to a shaky start as vice-captain Shubman Gill departed for four off two deliveries in the opening over, courtesy of Lungi Ngidi. Captain Suryakumar Yadav also failed to add significant runs, falling for 12 off 11 in Ngidi’s third over. Opener Abhishek Sharma couldn’t settle either, managing only 17 from 12 balls before being dismissed by Lutho Sipamla in the seventh over.

Tilak Varma and Axar Patel steadied the innings briefly with a 30-run stand for the fourth wicket, but Varma was eventually removed for 26 off 32, giving Ngidi his third breakthrough. Meanwhile, marking his return to international cricket after injury, Hardik Pandya went after Keshav Maharaj, smashing two sixes in the 13th over.

At the time of reporting, India were 96/4 after 13 overs, with Axar Patel (16) and Pandya (14) in the middle. Ngidi has been the standout bowler for South Africa so far, delivering figures of 3/21 from his three overs.
