Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain MS Dhoni has departed from the team camp following the conclusion of their IPL 2025 season. The team played their final match of the tournament against Gujarat Titans (GT) on Sunday, May 24, in Ahmedabad. With CSK finishing at the bottom of the points table in 10th place and missing out on the playoffs, their campaign ended with the last league match.
After the game, Dhoni headed back to his hometown, Ranchi. A video circulating on social media shows Dhoni stepping out of a car and entering the airport. Dressed casually in a t-shirt, jeans, black sunglasses, and carrying a backpack, the veteran cricketer was seen making his way inside.

CSK Crash Out of Playoff Race Even After Dhoni’s Captaincy Comeback
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) began their IPL 2025 campaign under the leadership of Ruturaj Gaikwad. However, after featuring in just five matches, Gaikwad was sidelined for the remainder of the season due to injury.
MS Dhoni stepped in to lead the team during a challenging phase, but his return to captaincy couldn’t reverse their fortunes, and CSK failed to qualify for the playoffs. The 2025 season turned out to be a disappointing one for the franchise, as they ended at the bottom of the points table with just four wins and ten losses from 14 games.
They concluded their campaign with a dominant 83-run win over Gujarat Titans, salvaging a bit of pride. Dhoni, who featured in all 14 matches, scored 196 runs at an average of 24.50 and a strike rate of 135.17. With Dhoni turning 43, questions loom over whether he will return for another season.
He was retained by CSK for ₹4 crore under the ‘uncapped player’ category ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. Notably, this marks the second consecutive year that CSK have failed to make the playoffs, having finished fifth in 2024. Since winning their fifth title in 2023, the team has struggled to reach the top four.
