Former India captains MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma walked out carrying the T20 World Cup 2026 trophy before the final between India and New Zealand on Sunday, March 8, at the Narendra Modi Stadium. They were joined by Jay Shah, the chairman of the International Cricket Council.

Rohit, who is also the brand ambassador of the ongoing tournament, wore an ICC T-shirt with beige trousers, while MS Dhoni chose a black shirt paired with blue denim jeans.

MS Dhoni led India to victory in the first-ever ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2007, where the team defeated Pakistan in the final in Johannesburg. He later retired from international cricket in August 2020.

Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma captained India to the T20 World Cup title in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, beating South Africa in the final in Barbados. He is still playing international cricket and currently features in the ODI format.

India begins the T20 World Cup 2026 final on a strong note against NZ

Mitchell Santner, the New Zealand captain, won the toss and chose to bowl first against India. India’s opener Sanju Samson got the innings going in style by hitting a six off Matt Henry on the fifth ball. In the third over, Abhishek Sharma hit two fours while Samson added another boundary off Glenn Phillips, helping India collect 15 runs in the over.

The pair then went after Lockie Ferguson in the next over, scoring 24 runs. At the time of writing, India were 51 without loss after four overs, with Samson on 24 off 14 balls and Abhishek on 23 off 10 balls.
