[WATCH]- Proud Moment: Rohit Sharma’s Parents Inaugurate Stand Named After Him At Wankhede

A stand at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium was officially named after India’s ODI captain, Rohit Sharma, on Friday, May 16. The inauguration was done by Rohit’s parents alongside Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The stand was previously known as the Divecha Pavilion Level 3.

The entire Mumbai Indians (MI) team attended the ceremony. Rohit has been with the franchise since 2011 and has captained them to five IPL titles. You can watch the video here:

During the unveiling on Friday, Rohit Sharma expressed that it felt “very, very special” to have a stand named after him at the Wankhede Stadium while he was still actively representing India in one format.

“For me… to honour me while I am still playing, it is very, very special. I have retired from two formats, but I am still playing one format. So, it will be a surreal feeling on May 21 when I come here and play against Delhi Capitals, representing Mumbai Indians, and to have a stand, it be a very, very special feeling,” Sharma said via PTI.

Rohit Sharma becomes latest cricketer honoured with a stand at Wankhede Stadium

With a stand now named in his honour at the Wankhede Stadium, Rohit Sharma joins legendary cricketers Sunil Gavaskar and Sachin Tendulkar, who also have stands at the iconic venue. Rohit began his domestic career with Mumbai in the 2006–07 season and played his final red-ball game for the team in January 2025.

Having announced his retirement from Test cricket on Wednesday, May 7, Rohit played his last Test at the Wankhede in November 2024, where he scored 18 and 11 as India suffered a 25-run defeat against New Zealand, losing the series 0–3 at home. His next expected appearance for India is in the three-match ODI series against Bangladesh in August.
