Rinku Singh‘s strong six shattered the glass panel of the media box, potentially leading to repercussions, according to Dale Steyn. Rinku Singh further solidifies his reputation with another impressive innings, scoring an unbeaten 68 off 39 balls against South Africa in the 2nd T20I.
Achieving his maiden T20I fifty, Rinku has consistently performed well since his India debut in August, showcasing his power-hitting abilities. While recognized as a formidable finisher, his recent innings highlights his capability beyond explosive performances in death overs.
Coming in to bat after the fall of Tilak Varma’s wicket in the sixth over, Rinku Singh made an immediate impact with a straight drive for four on the first ball. After settling down alongside Suryakumar Yadav, Rinku remained relatively quiet for the next four overs.
However, in the 11th over, he displayed power with consecutive boundaries off Marco Jansen. Rinku truly unleashed his aggressive side in the 13th over, hitting three fours against Andile Phehlukwayo and another three off Lizaad Williams to complete his fifty in just 30 balls.
Rinku Singh’s powerful six collided with the glass panel of the media box
He shifted gears for the last four overs, playing without boundaries until the penultimate over. In a spectacular display, he hit consecutive sixes off Aiden Markram, propelling India to a total of 180.
However, this aggressive hitting came at a cost, as the second six caused significant damage by creating a large crack in the glass panel of the media box at St. George’s Park in Gqeberha. Unfortunately, this marked Rinku’s last scoring shot as rain brought India’s innings to an end at 180/7.
As play was interrupted, the broadcaster conveyed, “Take a look at that six, but it has proved to be costly. It broke a glass in the media box. We have a picture of it.”
”That is what it has resulted in,” to which South Africa great Dale Steyn added, “Yes, and someone in the eastern bay of Gqeberha won’t be too happy with Rinku Singh breaking one of their windows.“

“Wonderful shots. The off-spinners are kind of difficult to get a hold of. Aiden Markram saw a gap for himself there. He had picked up a wicket so maybe he thought ‘let me squeeze another one here or slip in a quick over, but Rinku had a different idea.”
”Managed to come down the wicket, get to the pitch of that delivery and just break a window in the process. Nonetheless it was a great shot.”
Rinku Singh’s remarkable innings was overshadowed by South Africa’s swift chase, securing a revised target of 152 in just 15 overs and taking a 1-0 lead in the series.
However, Rinku’s performance caught the attention of Dale Steyn, who praised the Indian youngster for displaying a ‘mature’ batting style. Steyn even acknowledged seeing traits reminiscent of his former teammate and a South African legend in Rinku’s approach.
“I enjoyed his temperament. And I liked that at the start of his innings, when he scored an early boundary and went ‘thank you very much, I’ll take a single’. And later, he would score 9-10 off the first three balls of an over and that’s already enough at the St. George’s Park.”
”He made it a 15-17 over, which was very impressive for me. That’s something you see only from experienced players. Someone like Hashim Amla used to do it. So that really showed that there’s some maturity in his innings.”
”He was effective both off side and leg side and whenever the ball was overpitched, he showed his power game and hit over the top for six. So just an overall all-round player,” added South Africa’s highest Test wicket-taker.
