[WATCH]- Rohit Sharma’s Champions Trophy Moment At Wankhede Anniversary Celebration Goes Viral

India captain Rohit Sharma posed with the Champions Trophy during the celebrations for Wankhede Stadium’s 50th anniversary in Mumbai on Sunday, January 19. The grand event, hosted by the Mumbai Cricket Association, saw legendary figures of Mumbai cricket, including Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, and Ravi Shastri, in attendance.

A viral video from the event shows Gavaskar and Shastri inviting Rohit to stand closer to the Champions Trophy. However, the skipper humbly declined, stepping aside to let the senior legends take the spotlight.

Tendulkar, Gavaskar, and Shastri posed prominently behind the prestigious trophy, while Rohit chose to stand at the far left of the stage. You can watch the video here:

Rohit Sharma made his intentions clear, expressing his determination to lead the team in bringing the Champions Trophy back to Wankhede Stadium, hinting at possible celebrations in Mumbai.

Notably, India’s T20 World Cup victory last year was marked with a grand rooftop bus parade along Marine Drive, which concluded with a spectacular felicitation ceremony at Wankhede Stadium.

“We will embark on another tournament. I am sure when we reach Dubai, the wishes of 140 crore people will be behind us, we know that,” Rohit said, evoking cheers from the crowd at the Wankhede Stadium.

“We will try and do everything we can to bring this trophy back here to the Wankhede,” he added.

Rohit Sharma has been appointed captain of India’s 15-member squad for the Champions Trophy, set to begin on February 19.

Shubman Gill will serve as vice-captain in a team featuring prominent players like Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah, and Mohammed Shami. The squad was announced by chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar in Mumbai on Saturday, January 18.

Rohit reminisces about Mumbai parade

Meanwhile, Rohit reminisced about the unforgettable bus parade following India’s T20 World Cup victory. He expressed confidence that the team would celebrate the win in Mumbai after their meeting with the Prime Minister in New Delhi.

Thousands of fans gathered for the parade, where Rohit, Virat Kohli, and former coach Rahul Dravid took center stage, capturing hearts with their enthusiastic celebrations.

“I remember, we were still in Barbados after winning the World Cup, and we were stuck there due to a storm, but planning was in process as to what we would do once we were back in India.”

“It was planned that we would go to Delhi, but what after that? No one knew what to do after that, but I wanted that World Cup (trophy) should come here to Wankhede. Each of the recent World Cups we have won in 2007 and 2011 has been celebrated at Wankhede, and bringing the trophy of 2024 was also very important for us,” he added.
