Shafali Verma – The Indian Under 19 Women’s Team created history as they registered comprehensive win over England in the finals played at Senwes Park, Potchersforrom on 29 January 2023.

It was a dominating performance by Shafali Verma’s led side right from the word go. After opting to field first, the Indian bowlers kept it tight with discipline bowling effort not allowing the England batters to score runs freely. Titas Sadhu was the pick of bowlers with 2 wickets giving away just 6 runs. Parshavi Chopra and Archana Devi grabbed 2 wickets each while Mannat Kashyap, Shafali Verma, and Sonam Yadav grabbed 1 wicket each Soumya Tiwari produced a direct hit. The Indian women’s team skittled out England for just 68 runs in 17.1 overs.

Chasing down a modest total of 69 runs, the Indian openers Shafali Verma and Shweta Seharwat went cheaply. Trisha Gongadi and Soumya Tiwari steadied the ship with 46 runs for the 3rd wicket. Gongadi was dismissed before the finishing line. Soumya Tiwari hit winning runs as the Indian women’s team won the match by 7 wickets with 36 balls to spare. For her figures of 2 for 6 in 4 overs, Titas Sadhu was named player of the match award.

Shafali Verma had tears while speaking during the match presentation. She could not speak for a while before crediting teammates for winning World Cup. The Indian women’s team only lost to Australia in the Super Six stage before coming strongly.

Shafali Verma was a part of the runners-up team during the 2020 World Cup played in Australia. It was a superb performance by the women in Blue as they dominated the tournament.

Indian Team finished top of the Pool stage defeating hosts South Africa, United Arab Emirates, and Scotland. They lost the first Super Six match against Australia after being bundled for a low total.

India then produced a dominating performance against Sri Lanka to finish top of the Super 6 stage. They showed their domination against New Zealand in the first semi-finals before winning the match by 8 wickets. Shweta Seharwat finished as the leading run-getter for Team India in this tournament. The Indian bowlers looked sharp right especially in the semi-finals and finals.

This was the first title for Indian women’s Cricket Team as the senior team finished runners-up in 2005 and 2017.
