India captain Shubman Gill set the tone with a stellar performance on Day 2 of the second Test against the West Indies at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Saturday, October 11, scoring his 10th Test century. The right-handed batsman reached the milestone off 177 balls, marking his first century against the West Indies, with an innings featuring 13 fours and a six.

Gill achieved the landmark in the 130th over of India’s first innings, just 14 overs after the lunch break. Facing a length delivery outside off from Khary Pierre, he drove it to cover point, and a misfield allowed him three runs. He acknowledged the applause from the crowd, teammates, and support staff by removing his cap and raising his bat.

The 26-year-old received a congratulatory hug from his batting partner, wicketkeeper-batsman Dhruv Jurel, but the Indian captain refrained from his usual bow celebration. You can watch the video here:

Shubman Gill has delivered an outstanding batting performance in Tests this year. In the five-match series in England earlier, the right-handed batsman scored 754 runs, featuring a double century and three centuries. He continued his fine form by registering a fifty in the first Test against the West Indies.

Shubman Gill Joins Virat Kohli With Fifth Test Century Of 2025

Shubman Gill has entered an elite group alongside Virat Kohli by scoring his fifth Test century as captain in the current calendar year. Kohli had previously reached this milestone twice, in 2017 and 2018. At the time of writing, India declared their innings at 518/5 after 134.2 overs, with skipper Gill unbeaten on 129 off 196 balls, while Roston Chase dismissed Dhruv Jurel for 44 (79).

Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal led the charge earlier with a brilliant 175 from 258 deliveries, including 22 boundaries. Contributions also came from Sai Sudharsan (87 off 165), Nitish Reddy (43 off 54), and KL Rahul (38 off 54). For the visitors, Jomel Warrican emerged as the most successful bowler, claiming three wickets.

India currently holds a 1-0 lead in the series after a commanding victory in the opening Test by an innings and 140 runs in Ahmedabad.
