India’s T20I captain, Suryakumar Yadav, spoke about his journey through injury and recovery as he gears up to lead the Men in Blue in the 2025 Asia Cup in the UAE. He assumed captaincy in the shorter format following Rohit Sharma’s retirement.
In a recently shared video, Suryakumar detailed how his injury was initially identified, the surgery he underwent, and the rigorous rehabilitation that followed. He also expressed heartfelt thanks for the support and guidance he received during the recovery period.
Now fully recovered, the skipper has returned to the field, with the video showing him training intensively, working out, and sharpening his batting skills.
“I’m feeling good right now. It’s been five to six weeks. Good process, good routines for the last six weeks and fingers crossed. Feeling really well. It [the sports hernia injury] actually got diagnosed close to the end of IPL.”
”I felt it because I had a similar kind of injury last year as well and that’s how I got to know. So few checklists were there. I tried those things and then I realized that it’s time to go and do a small MRI,” said Suryakumar to the BCCI.

“CoE Coaches Know How To Manage My Body”- Suryakumar Yadav
The right-handed batter credited the conditioning coach and physiotherapists for supporting him throughout his recovery. He added that the rehabilitation was tackled week by week, which helped him achieve a gradual and full recovery.
Suryakumar Yadav is set to captain India in a major tournament for the first time, with the Men in Blue beginning their Asia Cup 2025 campaign against hosts UAE on September 10.
“When I did [the scans], [the injury] was very clear in that. I did it post IPL, went to Germany. And it went really well how it went last year. And I knew how the recovery is going to be step by step. So I was prepared for everything. So we took one week at a time. And we are here and I am feeling good,” said Suryakumar.
“I feel the most important thing is that the COE and NCA staff understood how my body reacts. The strength coaches and physios planned workouts accordingly. We took it week by week, and that’s how I recovered steadily,” he added.
