India’s first-choice No. 3 batter, Tilak Varma, has started his recovery process and is edging closer to a return after undergoing surgery for testicular torsion. The injury, sustained during the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025–26, ruled him out of the first three matches of the ongoing T20I series against New Zealand.
With the 2026 T20 World Cup less than three weeks away, Varma has resumed physical training and is aiming to be available for the latter part of the series. The promising left-hander is eyeing a comeback in the fourth T20I, set to be played in Visakhapatnam on January 28.
According to sources, Varma is currently pain-free and progressing well as he works his way back to full match fitness.
“If everything goes well, he will be fit before the fourth T20I on January 28 in Visakhapatnam. He has resumed physical training and, in a day or two, will start batting and other skill-based activities,” a source informed TOI.
Tilak Varma was recently seen training in the gym as he continues his recovery process. The young batter is progressing well and is expected to regain full match fitness ahead of the T20 World Cup. You can watch the video here:

Tilak Varma’s Remarkable Consistency In T20Is
The left-handed batter has played a key role in India’s sustained dominance in T20I cricket, with the team holding the No. 1 ranking for an extended period. Since making his T20I debut in August 2023, the elegant southpaw has scored 1,183 runs in 40 matches at an impressive strike rate of 144.09, including two centuries, with a highest score of an unbeaten 120.
Hailing from Hyderabad, the 23-year-old showcased his composure under pressure with a calm 69* in the Asia Cup 2025 final against Pakistan, steering the Men in Blue to victory from a challenging position. He also registered a century in a Vijay Hazare Trophy match against Chandigarh before adding 34 against Bengal.
Given his ability to deliver in big moments, India will be eager for him to return to full fitness as they aim to become the first side to successfully defend a T20 World Cup title. India’s T20I series against New Zealand begins on January 21, while their T20 World Cup campaign is set to open against the USA in Mumbai on February 7.
