Australia’s star batter Travis Head pulled off a stunning one-handed catch at short leg on Day 2 of the first Test against Sri Lanka at the Galle International Stadium. The South Australian reacted swiftly, diving to his right to dismiss Angelo Mathews, helping the visitors maintain their dominance.
The dismissal came in the 10th over, bowled by Nathan Lyon, who extracted sharp turn and bounce from over the wicket. Mathews hesitated between leaving or playing the delivery, ultimately getting a glove on it. Positioned at short leg, Head initially moved left but quickly adjusted, diving full stretch to complete the spectacular catch.

Angelo Mathews had a lucky escape in Lyon’s previous over when the ball struck the stumps but failed to dislodge the bails. However, he eventually fell as the Aussie spinner’s first wicket.
Travis Head’s Explosive Knock as Opener Powers Australia to a Mammoth Total
Travis Head’s blistering 57 off 40 balls gave Australia a flying start after stand-in skipper Steve Smith won the toss and chose to bat. The left-hander put on a 92-run opening stand with Usman Khawaja before falling to Prabath Jayasuriya.
Despite Marnus Labuschagne’s dismissal for 20, Smith and Khawaja punished the Sri Lankan bowlers with superb centuries, showcasing their class and patience. Smith played a masterful knock of 141, while Khawaja anchored the innings brilliantly with a career-best 232, frustrating the home side’s bowlers.
Debutant Josh Inglis joined the centurion list with a rapid 102 off just 94 balls, displaying his aggressive stroke play. Alex Carey remained unbeaten on 46, providing stability in the lower order, while Mitchell Starc contributed a quickfire 19* as Australia declared at a commanding 654/6.
In response, Sri Lanka struggled early. Matthew Kuhnemann removed Oshada Fernando, and Starc dismissed Dimuth Karunaratne before Nathan Lyon claimed Angelo Mathews. The hosts ended the day at 44/3, trailing by a massive 610 runs.
