Travis Head of Australia once again stole the limelight with a unique celebration. The 31-year-old showcased an intriguing gesture after taking the wicket of Kamindu Mendis on Day 1 (Thursday, February 6) of the second Test against Sri Lanka in Galle.
Head removed Mendis for 13 with the last ball of the 46th over, delivering a flighted ball outside off-stump. Mendis attempted a cut shot but edged it straight to Steve Smith in the slip. Following the breakthrough, Head marked the moment with an interesting celebration by shaking his bowling hand.

It’s notable that Travis Head made headlines for his celebration after dismissing Rishabh Pant in the Melbourne Test of the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. After taking the wicket of the dangerous batter, Head performed a quirky hand and finger gesture.

Head’s celebration stirred controversy, with many criticizing the Australian batter for the gesture. However, in an interview, he explained that the celebration was meant to symbolize a ‘finger on the ice.’
Australia’s captain Pat Cummins also provided insight into the celebration during a post-match interview. He revealed that it was a joke that began when Head, after taking a wicket, placed his finger in an ice bucket and walked in front of veteran spinner Nathan Lyon.
Travis Head Smashes Quickfire Half-Century in Test Series Opener Against Sri Lanka
Opening the batting for Australia in the first Test against Sri Lanka, Travis Head played a stellar innings, scoring a rapid half-century in the first innings. The left-hander struck 10 fours and one six, finishing with 57 runs off 40 balls. His exciting knock came to an end when he was dismissed by left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya.
However, Head’s opening partner, Usman Khawaja, stole the limelight with a magnificent 232-run innings. Stand-in captain Steve Smith and wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis also contributed centuries, scoring 141 and 102 runs, respectively.
Australia secured a dominant victory by an innings and 242 runs, taking a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. This defeat marked Sri Lanka’s heaviest loss in Test cricket history.
