India’s U-19 defending champions made a strong start against Bangladesh in the U-19 World Cup opener in Bloemfontein on Saturday. Put into bat, India lost early wickets with a score of 31/2 in 7.2 overs, but opener Adarsh Singh and captain Uday Saharan’s partnership propelled India past the 100-run mark, adding 116 runs for the third wicket. Adarsh, however, departed after scoring 76.

During their stand, a heated exchange unfolded between India’s captain, Uday, and Bangladesh’s Ariful Islam, leading to a face-off before the umpire and Bangladesh captain Rabby intervened, preventing further escalation. The match also witnessed Bangladesh players giving fiery send-offs to Indian players.

Bangladesh, having won the toss, chose to bowl. As the recent Asia Cup champions, they entered the U-19 World Cup as strong contenders. Uday Saharan, at 19 years and 97 days, captained India and was the team’s oldest member. In seven ODIs, Uday scored 197 runs in six innings with an average of 39.40, showcasing consistency with a century and a fifty.

The India U19 Playing XI included Adarsh Singh, Arshin Kulkarni, Musheer Khan, Uday Saharan (C), Sachin Dhas, Priyanshu Moliya, Aravelly Avanish (Wk), Murugan Abhishek, Aaradhya Shukla, Raj Limbani, and Naman Tiwari.

On the other side, the Bangladesh Playing XI featured Ashiqur Rahman Shibli (wk), Jishan Alam, Chowdhury Md Rizwan, Ariful Islam, Ahrar Amin, Mohammad Shihab James, Mahfuzur Rahman Rabby (C), Sheikh Paevez Jibon, Rohanat Doullah Borson, Md Iqbal Hossain Emmon, and Maruf Mridha. The match showcased intense moments, both in terms of on-field play and player interactions.
