India captain Shubman Gill took a sly dig at England’s batters on Day 1 (Thursday, July 10) of the third Test in the ongoing five-match series at the historic Lord’s Cricket Ground in London. After lunch, England resumed their innings at 83/2 with Joe Root and Ollie Pope at the crease, but the Indian bowlers tightened the screws by maintaining impeccable lines and lengths, making run-scoring a tough task.

In a particularly slow phase between overs 27 and 32, England could only add two runs while enduring a stretch of 29 consecutive dot balls. As the hosts struggled to keep up with their much-hyped ‘Bazball’ style, Shubman Gill delivered a sarcastic comment during the second session, saying:

“No more entertaining cricket. Welcome back to the boring Test cricket, boys.”

The hosts brought up their 100-run milestone in 35.4 overs — marking their second-slowest century stand in an innings during the Bazball era. Their slowest effort remains 37.2 overs, which also came against India in Rajkot in 2024.

England survive second session as India bowl tightly

England captain Ben Stokes won the toss and chose to bat first in the third Test, making one change with Jofra Archer replacing Josh Tongue. India also made a single change, bringing Jasprit Bumrah back into the XI in place of Prasidh Krishna.

Despite a disciplined opening spell from Bumrah and Akash Deep, the duo couldn’t strike early. It was Nitish Kumar Reddy who provided the breakthrough in the 14th over, dismissing both openers — Ben Duckett for 23 and Zak Crawley for 18. Joe Root and Ollie Pope then rebuilt the innings, guiding England to 83/2 at lunch after 25 overs.

In the second session, India’s bowlers kept the pressure on with tight lines. Although England avoided further losses, they managed just 70 runs in 24 overs, scoring at a rate of 2.92. At tea, the hosts stood at 153/2 after 49 overs, with Root unbeaten on 54 and Pope on 44.
