The International Cricket Council has declared a five-year ban on Devon Thomas, the 34-year-old West Indian wicketkeeper-batter, due to his admission of violating seven anti-corruption codes of Sri Lanka Cricket, the Emirates Cricket Board, and the Caribbean Premier League.
Thomas, who entered the international scene in 2009, has represented his country in 1 Test, 21 ODIs, and 12 T20Is, concluding his international career in August 2022.
Alex Marshall, the ICC General Manager – Integrity Unit, said: “Having played both international and professional domestic/franchise cricket, Devon attended numerous anti-corruption education sessions.”
Consequently, he was aware of his responsibilities outlined in the Anti-Corruption Codes but neglected to fulfill them in three separate franchise leagues.
“This ban is apt and should send a strong message to players and corrupters that attempts to corrupt our sport will be dealt with firmly.”
Partial Suspension: Devon Thomas Accepts Sanctions for Breaching Anti-Corruption Codes
The ban is effective from May 23, 2023, the date when he was provisionally suspended. He accepted sanctions for breaching the following codes of conduct – Article 2.1.1 of the SLC Code: involvement in fixing or attempting to fix matches in the Lanka Premier League 2021. Article 2.4.4 of the SLC Code: failure to promptly report approaches to engage in corrupt conduct during the Lanka Premier League 2021.
Article 2.4.6 of the SLC Code: failure to cooperate with the Anti-Corruption Official’s investigation by withholding information or documentation without a valid reason. Article 2.4.7 of the SLC Code states that he obstructed or delayed the investigation into corrupt conduct by the Anti-Corruption Official. This includes actions like hiding, altering, or destroying any documents or information relevant to the investigation.
Article 2.4.4 of the ECB Code outlines his failure to promptly report any approaches or invitations to engage in corrupt conduct during the Abu Dhabi T10 2021 tournament. Article 2.4.4 of the CPL Code details his failure to promptly report any approaches or invitations to engage in corrupt conduct during the CPL 2021 tournament.
Article 2.4.2 of the CPL Code specifies his failure to promptly report receiving any gifts, payments, hospitality, or benefits that could have led to a breach of the CPL Code or brought him or Cricket into disrepute.
