Nine years have already elapsed since India’s memorable title triumph at the ICC World Cup 2011. That night at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai will forever be in the heart of Indian cricket lovers. The whole team under the leadership entered the tournament with a dream they have kept alive for 28 years and finally managed to turn into reality beating Sri Lanka in the title clash by six wickets.

The team has undergone a lot of changes since then and two World Cups have passed and India continue their hunt for their third title. But that team and the cricketers hold a special place in every Indian cricket fans. While many have retired from their beloved sports, only a handful continue to ply their trade.

Let us take a look at what are India’s ICC World Cup 2011 winning team members doing now:

#1 Sachin Tendulkar

After finally achieving his dream of winning the ICC World Cup trophy, Sachin Tendulkar hanged his boots from international cricket in 2013. He is arguably the greatest batsman to play the sport in the modern era and often draws comparisons with Sir Don Bradman.

Currently, he is a part of the Indian Premier League franchise Mumbai Indians as a mentor.

#2 Virender Sehwag

Amid the rise of several young openers, the swashbuckling opener Virender Sehwag announced his retirement from international cricket on his 37th birthday. Since then, he has been associated with commentary and was also a part of the Kings XI Punjab support staff.

However, he has parted ways with Punjab Kings (previously known as Kings XI Punjab) and currently busy with commentary stints. Sehwag is also quite famous on social media for his hilarious and light-hearted posts.

#3 Gautam Gambhir

The southpaw from Delhi shared a match-winning stand alongside MS Dhoni to guide India to the coveted trophy. Gautam Gambhir played a fine knock of 97 runs and missed the century by a whisker.

The cricketer finally announced his retirement in late 2018 before joining the Bharatiya Janata Party. Meanwhile, Gautam Gambhir is currently working as a mentor of the Lucknow Super Giants, who are one of the two new teams in IPL 2022.

#4 Virat Kohli

Kohli was a youngster when India lifted the World Cup in 2011. He has struck only one century in that global tournament and since then he has piled on runs with ease.

Currently, he is arguably the greatest batsman of the current generation with tons of runs under his belt in all formats.

Recently, Kohli relinquished all leadership duties including the IPL and is focusing on his batting.

#5 MS Dhoni

The then India skipper played an unbeaten knock of 91 runs to guide India to the title. His six to finish off the proceedings will forever be in the heart of the Indian cricket lovers. He is the only captain in history to win three ICC titles.

MS Dhoni retired from international cricket on August 15 in 2020 on the occasion of India’s independence day.

The celebrated cricketer recently stepped down as Chennai Super Kings’ captain in the IPL and handed the baton to Ravindra Jadeja.

#6 Suresh Raina

Suresh Raina faded away from the national side with the emergence of the youngsters despite churning runs in the IPL. His weakness against the short pitch delivery proved to be fatal and the cricketer is unlikely to return to the national side again.

However, Raina went unsold in the IPL 2022 mega auction and Chennai Super Kings didn’t retain him. Currently, he is seen as a commentator in the ongoing IPL 2022.

#7 Yuvraj Singh

The Man of the tournament faced his life’s most stern test soon afterwards when he underwent a two-and-a-half month treatment for cancer in the USA.

On his return, though Yuvraj showed signs of his old self while batting, his performances weren’t consistent enough to warrant a place in the side. The champion all-rounder finally announced his retirement in 2019.

However, he continues to play franchise cricket and was last seen in the Road Safety World Series.

#8 Yusuf Pathan

Yusuf Pathan’s career also took a wrong turn after that World Cup. He failed to match up with the fitness standards and was dropped from the side. He was one of the standout performers for his sides in the IPL before announcing retirement from all forms of the game earlier this year.

The all-rounder from Baroda was last seen during the Road Safety World Series plying his trade for the India Legends.

#9 Ravichandran Ashwin

Ravichandran Ashwin only played a couple of matches at the 2011 World Cup but soon rose as India’s No.1 spinner across formats. However, he lost his place in the limited-overs side owing to poor outings in the ICC Champions Trophy in 2017.

However, he still India’s go-to bowler in red-ball cricket and has been one of the key performers in the last few years.

#10 Harbhajan Singh

The off-spinner from Punjab was a force to reckon with during the 2011 World Cup with his floating off-spin to go along with his never-give-up attitude. But gradually he lost his place in the playing with the rise of Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Ravindra Jadeja.

Harbhajan Singh announced his retirement from all forms of the game and has donned the commentator’s hat in the IPL 2022 and also works as a cricket expert.

#11 Zaheer Khan

After ending as the joint highest wicket-taker in the tournament, Zaheer Khan was laid down by a hamstring injury that forced him out of the side. On his return at 35 years of age, Zaheer looked down on pace but still went on to pick up a 5-for in his last Test.

Since his retirement, he has been associated with Mumbai Indians in the IPL as a director of cricket operations.

#12 Ashish Nehra

Ashish Nehra has been the most injury-prone Indian fast bowler and the 2011 ICC World Cup was no different. He missed a couple of matches due to injury but came back hard every time.

Since his retirement from cricket two years back, Nehra was working with the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL as the bowling coach. Currently, he is seen as the head coach of Gujarat Titans in IPL 2022.

#13 Munaf Patel

One of the unsung heroes of India’s triumph in 2011, Munaf Patel soon fell out of favour of the selectors, having last played for India in an ODI against England in September 2011. He did continue playing domestic cricket and the IPL till 2017 before announcing his retirement in November 2018.

He was recently seen representing India Legends in the Road Safety World Series.

#14 S Sreesanth

The 2011 World Cup final turned out to be Sreesanth’s last ODI for India as he was one of three IPL players banned for life in the spot-fixing scandal in 2013. After a seven-year-long ban,

Sreesanth returned to competitive cricketer earlier this year when he represented his state Kerala in the domestic circuit. However, he called time on his illustrious career earlier this year.

#15 Piyush Chawla

The 2011 World Cup was the last time the leg-spinner donned the Indian jersey. Although he has struggled to find a place in the national team, Piyush Chawla has been a regular in the IPL playing for Kolkata Knight Riders.

Last time around he shifted his base to Chennai Super Kings but the fate of IPL 2020 hangs by the wire amid the COVID-19 outbreak before joining Mumbai Indians.

The veteran leg-spinner is currently seen doing commentary in the IPL. However, he is yet to announce his retirement.
