The last time India played a Test at Headingley was during the 2021–22 England tour. It was the third match of the five-Test series, with India leading 1-0 going into the game. After winning the toss, captain Virat Kohli opted to bat first—a decision that backfired badly. India were bundled out for just 78 runs in the first innings, with none of the batters managing to settle.
Only Rohit Sharma (19) and Ajinkya Rahane (18) reached double figures. England’s pace attack dominated, as James Anderson (3/6), Craig Overton (3/14), Ollie Robinson (2/16), and Sam Curran (2/27) tore through the Indian line-up. England then piled on 432 runs in reply, taking full control of the game.
India fought back with a better batting effort in the second innings but eventually lost the match by an innings and 76 runs. England captain Joe Root led by example with the bat, scoring a brilliant century that powered his side to a first-innings total of 432, giving them a commanding 354-run lead. He received solid support from Rory Burns (61), Haseeb Hameed (68), and Dawid Malan (70).
For India, Mohammad Shami (4/95) and Jasprit Bumrah (2/59) were the standout bowlers. In India’s second innings, Cheteshwar Pujara showed resilience with a gritty 91 off 189 balls, aided by Rohit Sharma (59) and Virat Kohli (55). Despite their efforts, India were bowled out for 278, suffering a heavy defeat by an innings and 76 runs.
Pacer Ollie Robinson was the standout performer for England, claiming a five-wicket haul and finishing with seven wickets in the match. His impactful performance played a key role in England’s dominant win, earning him the Player of the Match award.
