On Wednesday, the auction for five women’s IPL teams concluded in Mumbai, with owners of Women Premier League teams Delhi Capitals, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, as well as Adani Group and Capri Global, owners of Sharjah Warriors in ILT20, winning bids.
Women Premier League The Adani Group’s Adani Sportsline Pvt Ltd received the highest bid of Rs 1,289 crore for the Ahmedabad team, while Reliance Industries’ Indiawin Sports Pvt Ltd received the second-highest bid of Rs 912 crore for the Mumbai team.
RCB owner Diageo won the Bengaluru team with a Rs 901 crore bid. JSW’s JSW GMR Pvt Ltd won the Delhi team for Rs 810 crore, while Capri Global Holdings came in fifth with a Rs 757 crore bid for the Lucknow team.
The auction of women’s IPL teams netted the BCCI Rs 4669.99 crore.

While making the announcement on Twitter, BCCI general secretary Jay Shah also revealed that the board has decided to name the league Women’s Premier League (WPL).
“Today is a historic day in cricket as the bidding for teams of inaugural #WPL broke the records of the inaugural Men’s IPL in 2008! Congratulations to the winners as we garnered Rs.4669.99 Cr in total bid. This marks the beginning of a revolution in women’s cricket and paves the way for a transformative journey ahead not only for our women cricketers but for the entire sports fraternity. The #WPL would bring necessary reforms in women’s cricket and would ensure an all-encompassing ecosystem that benefits each and every stakeholder,” he tweeted.

Viacom18 has secured the Women’s Indian Premier League (IPL) media rights for the 2023-2027 cycle for a whopping Rs 951 crore, equating to INR 7.09 crore per match for the next five years.
The BCCI has not yet released the tournament’s schedule, but it is widely assumed that the first season, consisting of 22 matches, will take place between March 5 and March 23.
