Former KKR skipper Gautam Gambhir has heavily criticised the move to change the KKR captaincy halfway through the season. Kolkata’s loss against Mumbai in their last game added all the more weight on Gambhir’s thoughts.

KKR management decided to replace Dinesh Karthik with Eoin Morgan for the captaincy role, however, Gambhir feels that this will not serve well for the two-time IPL champions. He spoke about the reason extensively with Star Sports in the show Cricket Connected.

Gambhir said changing the team’s captaincy halfway through the tournament would serve no good for the team.

“Cricket is not about relationships, it’s about performances and honestly, I don’t think Morgan can change a lot of things. He could’ve changed a lot of things had he captained from the start of the tournament. No one changes during the middle of the tournament. It’s nice to have a good relationship between the coach and the captain,” said Gambhir on Star Sports.

Gautam Gambhir further stated that Eoin Morgan should have been selected as captain at the start of the tournament as this puts extra pressure on Dinesh Karthik now to perform with the bat.

“If KKR wanted to make this change, they should have done it at the start of the competition. If you are talking so much about a World Cup-winning captain being there in your team puts pressure on someone like Dinesh Karthik then why not just give it to Morgan straightaway, why put so much pressure on Karthik?”

He further went onto reveal the ugly truth behind KKR’s captaincy swap in his words. Gautam Gambhir hinted that it was perhaps a decision from the management which has been downplayed by both Dinesh Karthik and Eoin Morgan.

“My point is, it sounds very good when someone says that I want to concentrate on my batting but the truth is, you start getting fillers from the management whether they are happy or not, so it’s very unfortunate,” Gambhir opined.

Gautam Gambhir led KKR to two IPL titles between 2011-2017 before he decided to part ways with the franchise.
