The South African batsmen Herschelle Gibbs made his ODI debut on 3rd October 1996 against Kenya. He played a total of 248 matches scoring 8094 runs with an average of 36.13, along with 21 centuries and 37 half centuries.

While opening with Graeme Smith, Herschelle Gibbs scored 116 off 126 balls in the ICC Champions Trophy match played at Premadasa Stadium, Colombo on 20th September 2002. In his innings of 116, he hit 13 fours and 3 sixes. South Africa posted 316 for 5 in 50 overs. Chasing the target of 317 to win, Kenya were bowled out for 140. Gibbs was named as man of the match for his 116.

Gibbs continued his superb form with a brilliant 116*  not out during the first semi-finals against India of ICC Champions Trophy 2002 played at R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo on 25th September 2002.   India posted 261 for 9 in 50 overs. Chasing the target of 262 to win, Gibbs played brilliantly scoring 116 off 119 balls before retiring hurt. South Africa lost the match by 10 runs.

His 3rd successive century came against Bangladesh in the 1st ODI match played at Potchefstroom on 3rd October 2002. South Africa batted first and Gibbs while opening the innings scored 153 off 131 balls with 17 fours and 3 sixes helping the hosts to post 301 for 8 in 50 overs. Chasing the target of 302, Bangladesh were bowled out for 133. Gibbs for his 153 was named the man of the match.
