One-Day International (ODI) Cricket has been famous for centuries usually, but some of the marvels of the game broke several records along with the stereotypes. There are ten double centuries in the ODI cricket (men’s and women’s), overall and just for the knowledge, three of them have come from India’s Rohit Sharma. 

Indian prodigy Sachin Tendulkar was the first player to score a double hundred in the men’s ODI cricket. Before Tendulkar, former Australian women’s cricket team skipper Belinda Clark hit a double hundred, the first double hundred in the international white-ball cricket. Batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar is the first cricketer to score a double hundred in men’s ODIs. Tendulkar triumphed in this accomplishment in the second ODI versus South Africa, during the South Africa tour of India in 2010, at Gwalior Cricket Stadium.

MS Dhoni-led India won the toss batted first. Tendulkar, opening the batting for his side, scored 200 runs in 147 balls, at a strike rate of 136.05. The 38-year-old then smashed the prime South African bowling attack to all the park, hitting 25 fours and three sixes.

With his contribution, India put on a massive total of 401 for three. While South Africa could only manage to score 248 runs, as Indian bowling unit was too much for them. India won the derby by 153 runs.

As a skipper this time, Rohit Sharma scored his record-breaking third double century, in the ODI format. It was the second ODI of the Sri Lanka tour of India and India had lost the first one of the three-match series. Sri Lanka won the toss and was elected to field first.

While Rohit, opening the inning for India went on to score 208 runs off 153 deliveries, at a strike rate of 135.94. His massive and significant inning for the Indian team then involved 13 boundaries and 12 sixes! India put on a giant total of 392 for four and restricted the Islanders to a score of 251 for eight; India won the game by 141 runs.

Just the Indian opener then, Rohit Sharma scored his first double hundred against the prime Australian bowling line-up, then. It was the seventh ODI match of the Australia tour of India 2013, at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore. MS Dhoni-led India batted first as Australia won the toss and chose to field first.

Sharma, coming back from an injury showed the best of him to the cricketing world, as the 26-year-old then, went on to score 209 runs in 158 balls, at a strike rate of 132.27. He smashed 12 boundaries and 16 sixes, throughout the inning!

While India put on a total of 383 for six wickets. With a fabulous performance from the Indian bowling line-up, India managed to restrict the Aussies at a score of 326, all-out.

Fakhar Zaman, who completed 1000 ODI runs in just 18 innings, scored his maiden double hundred against Zimbabwe, in the fourth ODI of the Pakistan tour of Zimbabwe, at Queens Sports Club, Bulawayo.

Zaman scored 210 runs off 156 balls, not out, at a strike rate of 134.61. The 29-year-old then, smashed 24 boundaries and five sixes, during his inning. While Pakistan, batting first, put on a massive total of 399 for just a wicket, which was too much for Zimbabwe, Shadab Khan’s brilliant spell of 4 for 28, encouraged Pakistan to seal the victory.

Undoubtedly an absolute legend of the game Chris Gayle scored his first-ever double hundred in ODI cricket, against Zimbabwe. It was ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 and West Indies (WI) were facing Zimbabwe, at Manuka Oval, Canberra.

Gayle scored 215 runs in 147 deliveries, at a strike rate of 146.25, with ten boundaries and massive 16 sixes! With the ball, the 36-year-old then took two wickets for 35 runs. WI put on a giant total of 372 for 2, which Zimbabwe failed to chase and WI won the game by 73 runs (DLS method).

The veteran Indian opener Virender Sehwag scored his ODI career-best figures against West Indies; in the 2011 West Indies tour of India. It was the fourth game of the ODI series and India winning the toss chose to bat first at Holkar Cricket Stadium, Indore.

The 33-year-old then, exhibited his prime, scoring 219 runs off 149 balls, at a strike rate of 146.97. His fabulous inning comprised 25 fours and seven sixes! Moreover, Sehwag led India set a target of 419 runs which turned out to be too much for WI, as India won the game by 153 runs.

Belinda Clark, the former Australian women’s cricket team skipper is the first cricketer to hit a double century in ODI cricket, men or women. Clark achieved this feat against Denmark women, during Hero Honda Women’s World Cup 1997, at MIG Ground, Mumbai.

The 27-year-old then, as a captain, scored 229 runs in 155 deliveries, at a strike rate of 147.74. Clark hit 22 boundaries throughout her inning and carried the bat. With her contribution, Australia put on a total of 412 runs for three wickets.

While Denmark got all out for merely 49 runs, as the vintage Aussie bowling unit didn’t let them sustain. Australia won the game by a vast margin of 363 runs. Furthermore, Clark led the Australian women’s cricket team and went on to win the WC.

The young White Fern talent ignited the cricketing world with her marvellous performance against Ireland women, in 2018. Barely 18-year old then, Amelia Kerr scored a double hundred and took a five-wicket haul, in the same match. She scored 232 runs off 145 deliveries at a strike rate of 160 and carried the bat.

This is the highest individual score in women’s ODIs and the third-highest overall. While bowling, the right-arm leggie took five wickets for 17 runs. Playing as an all-rounder, Kerr also built a massive partnership of 295 runs with New Zealand’s Leigh Kasperek, for the second wicket.

Moreover, it was the third ODI of New Zealand women’s tour of Ireland and England 2018 in Dublin; New Zealand women put on a colossal total of 440 for three wickets. The target turned out to be too much for Ireland, as they fell at 135, all out. NZ won the match by 305 runs!

The Kiwi white-ball specialist Martin Guptill was at his prime against West Indies (WI), during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2014/15. The right-hand opening batter scored 237 runs in 163 balls, not out. His genius knock involved 24 fours and 11 sixes. The 29-year-old then smashed WI bowlers at a strike rate of 145.39 and carried the bat.

Further, it was the fourth quarter-final of the ICC CWC 2014/15, at Wellington. Served by Guptill, New Zealand set the target of 394 runs and went on to win the game by 143 runs, as WI could only manage to score 250 for all out.

The current Indian skipper and the opener Rohit Sharma are obviously at the top with his blistering knock of 264 runs off 173 deliveries, against Sri Lanka. It was Sharma’s second double hundred in the format and it rolled up at his favourite Eden Gardens, Kolkata.

The 27-year-old then, literally destroyed the Sri Lankan bowling lineup with 33 boundaries and nine sixes, at a strike rate of 152.60! Sharma got out on the last ball of the inning by Nuwan Kulasekara.

Besides, it was the fourth ODI of the Sri Lanka tour of India in 2014 and Virat Kohli-led India won the toss. While batting first India set a mammoth target of 405 runs. On the other hand, Sri Lanka was restricted to 251 for all out. Dhawal Kulkarni’s brilliant spell of 4 for 34 aided India, to clinch the victory by 153 runs.
