5 Records That Were Shattered On Day 2 Of The First Test Between West Indies And India

Day 2 of the first Test match between India and West Indies witnessed a series of records being shattered as India maintained their stronghold in the game.

After choosing to bat first, West Indies crumbled for a mere 150 runs, thanks to Ravichandran Ashwin’s sensational five-wicket haul.

In response, India made an impressive start with openers Rohit Sharma and debutant Yashasvi Jaiswal, guiding the team to a score of 80/0 by the end of Day 1.

On the following day, India continued their dominant batting display, amassing a total of 312 runs for the loss of only two wickets.

Here are the five noteworthy records that were broken on Day 2 of the Test:

1. Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal scripted history by becoming the first-ever Indian opening pair to secure a first-innings lead in a Test match.

Despite the challenging conditions, both batsmen displayed remarkable composure and determination, comfortably surpassing the West Indies’ first-innings total of 150 runs.

2. Yashasvi Jaiswal showcased his brilliance by achieving the highest score by an Indian Test debutant while playing away from home.

The young left-hander remained unbeaten on a magnificent 143*, surpassing Sourav Ganguly’s previous record of 131 runs on debut at Lord’s against England in 1996.

3. Virat Kohli, one of India’s all-time greats, added another milestone to his illustrious career.

Coming in to bat at No. 4 just before tea on Day 2, Kohli displayed his class, scoring an unbeaten 36* by the end of the day’s play.

In the process, he surpassed Virender Sehwag’s tally of 8,503 Test runs, securing the fifth position among India’s highest run-scorers in the format. Kohli has now accumulated 8,515 runs at an impressive average of over 48 across 110 Test matches.

4. Yashasvi Jaiswal continued his record-breaking spree by facing the highest number of deliveries on Test debut for India.

The 21-year-old’s composed and determined approach allowed him to face a remarkable 350 balls in his maiden Test innings, surpassing the legendary Mohammad Azharuddin’s previous record of 322 balls faced during his debut against England in 1984.

5. The opening pair of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma etched their names in the record books by establishing the highest-ever opening partnership for India outside Asia.

Despite the challenging pitch conditions, both batsmen showcased exceptional skills and constructed a colossal partnership of 229 runs.

Both Jaiswal and Sharma reached their respective centuries, with Sharma eventually being caught behind the wicket for a superb knock of 103 runs.

Their partnership surpassed the long-standing 44-year-old record of 213 runs set by Sunil Gavaskar and Chetan Chauhan against England at the Oval in 1979.

Overall, Day 2 of the Test match proved to be a record-breaking spectacle for India, with their commanding performance and outstanding individual achievements by players like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli.

These records highlight India’s exceptional batting prowess and their dominant position in the match against West Indies. With such remarkable feats, India continues to demonstrate their cricketing prowess on the international stage.
