The IPL, run by the BCCI, is the grandest T20 league in the world. Its stature is unmatched among the cricketing fraternity. It has everything – domestic players, international cricketers, top-tier commentators, and the biggest of them all perhaps, money. The franchises are owned by the richest businessmen and the fanciest movie stars.
However, when it comes to money-making for the Indian players, it comes as a surprise that the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s central contract is worth more than what the players are paid by the franchises. BCCI has had its fair share of criticism when it comes to domestic pay. But when the matter comes to the national players, they don’t compromise.
Here, we take a look at 8 cricketers whose BCCI contract is higher than their IPL contract:
8) Cheteshwar Pujara (CSK) |BCCI Contract – 5 crores | IPL Contract – 50 lakhs
India’s No.3 batsman in Tests, Pujara, was bought by the Chennai Super Kings in the 2021 IPL auction. He is not well known for his stroke-making ability. In the longest format, Pujara has made a name for his resilience and tenacity.
He was part of the Kings XI Punjab [now Punjab Kings] in 2014 and partnered with Virender Sehwag at the top. However, a poor strike rate of 100.80 forced the management to drop him. Nevertheless, he’ll hope to play for CSK in the second phase of the IPL in September.
