The Indian cricket team received a massive boost as batting coach Sitanshu Kotak confirmed that Virat Kohli is fit to play in the second ODI against England at Barabati Stadium, Cuttack. After missing the first game due to a knee issue, Kohli’s return has sparked discussions about India’s team combination moving forward.

Virat Kohli’s Injury and Recovery

Kohli’s absence from the first ODI was a rare occurrence, marking the first time in four years that he missed a match due to injury. His knee issue forced him to sit out, allowing young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal to make his debut. Now, with Kohli back in the squad, India must decide who will make way for him in the playing XI.

With Kohli ready to take his spot, the management faces a tough call between dropping Jaiswal or Shreyas Iyer. Kotak, while confirming Kohli’s availability, remained tight-lipped about the final XI, leaving the decision to the head coach and captain.

Virat Kohli is fit to play. He has come for practice and is good to go” Kotak said in the pre-match press conference on Saturday, as quoted by PTI.

How Kohli’s Return Affects India’s Batting Order

India’s tried-and-tested batting order includes Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill opening, followed by Kohli at number three. If Kohli replaces Jaiswal, this combination remains intact. However, if he replaces Iyer, Gill may have to bat at number three, potentially altering India’s approach. Iyer played a vital knock in the first ODI, scoring a crucial half-century that guided India to victory. His performance strengthens his case for retention, making it difficult for the management to drop him.

While confirming Kohli’s fitness, Kotak emphasized that the final decision rests with the head coach and captain. His statement suggests that multiple factors, including team balance and conditions, will influence the final call.

“That’s something for the head coach and captain to decide. Yes, the left-right combination is an important factor, but that’s not a question for me to answer,” batting coach said.

Team India’s Strategy for the Champions Trophy

This selection conundrum goes beyond just the England series. India is building a squad for the Champions Trophy, and their choices in this series will indicate their long-term strategy. The left-right batting combination plays a crucial role in India’s strategy. If India retains Jaiswal, they ensure variety at the top. However, if Kohli replaces him, the lineup becomes heavily right-handed.

Despite Kohli’s absence, India managed to win the first ODI convincingly. Key contributions from Iyer, KL Rahul, and the bowlers ensured a four-wicket victory. England, trailing 0-1 in the series, will be eager to bounce back. Kohli’s presence means their bowlers need a revised plan to tackle India’s formidable top order.
