The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has made a shocking decision by cutting match fees of players for the upcoming National T20 Cup very drastically. According to ESPNcricinfo, the players will now get a match fee of PKR 10,000, a 75 percent drop from that of the last edition of the same tournament. Earlier, it was PKR 40,000.

This revelation comes as a shock, especially when one considers the fact that the board made statements regarding investments in uplifting cricket in the country. Mohsin Naqvi, the PCB president, said that money in accounts of PCB was not meant for locking away but spending on players.

He said,“We’ll try to make the best available for you. I have told the PCB our job is not to save money or keep it hoarded away, building it up, but to spend it on cricket, from grassroots right through to the national team.”

PCB’s decision to cut down match fees:

PCB’s decision to slash match fees runs counter to Naqvi’s view. The board has expended on stadium adaptation, foreign coaching hires, and their run-off rights. Besides, the board has engaged five mentors, Waqar Younis, Misbah-ul-Haq, Saqlain Mushtaq, Sarfaraz Ahmed, and Shoaib Malik, at a cost of PKR 5 million a month each. The decision to cut match fees is absolutely not because of any financial trouble, a PCB official told ESPNcricinfo.

According to PCB, players now have many more chances to earn due to increasing numbers of tournaments in the calendar year. The National T20 Cup is starting on March 14. The event will hold a total of 39 matches across three cities: Faisalabad, Lahore, and Multan. The final will play on March 27 in Faisalabad.

Here is a controversial decision regarding reducing their match fees. However, it is to be seen what effect this will have on the players and the tournament. The PCB has invested in developing the game; however, it seems contradictory to what they are doing by implementing this decision.
