Indian cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar has reportedly requested the BCCI and ECB to preserve the ‘Nawab of Pataudi’ association with the India vs England Test series. Previously, the series played in England was known as the ‘Pataudi Trophy’.

However, the ECB recently announced a name change to the ‘Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy’ to honor both cricketing legends. According to a report by Cricbuzz, Sachin Tendulkar has spoken to officials from both boards, asking them to continue recognising the Pataudi legacy.

The report also mentioned that ICC chairman Jay Shah has weighed in on the issue. Following public backlash, the ECB is now likely to name the winner’s medal after Pataudi to maintain the historical connection.

“Yes, there is a confirmed plan to retain the Pataudi link in the England-India series,” an ECB official was quoted as telling Cricbuzz.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has voiced his disapproval of the ECB’s decision to rename the Pataudi Trophy as the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. In his column for Sportstar, he called the move unsettling and expressed his concerns, saying:

“The recent news that the ECB is going to retire the Pataudi Trophy, given to the winners of the Test series between England and India in England, is disturbing indeed. This is the first time one has heard of a trophy named after individual players being retired… It shows a total lack of sensitivity to the contribution made by the Pataudis to cricket in both England and India.”

Remembering The Legacy Of Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi

The late Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi led India in 40 Test matches, securing nine victories. One of his most notable achievements came in 1967–68 when he guided India to their first-ever overseas Test series win, defeating New Zealand 3-1. Remarkably, he accomplished this despite losing vision in one eye following a car accident.

Pataudi went on to play 46 Tests, amassing 2,793 runs at an average of 34.91, which included six centuries and 16 fifties. Many cricket experts have often speculated how much more he could have achieved had he retained full eyesight.
