With less than a month remaining before the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises announce their list of retained players for the upcoming IPL 2026 auction, teams are already strategising their next moves. According to a report, the auction is likely scheduled for December 15, while the player retention deadline has been set for November 15.
Despite being a mini auction, franchises are expected to make aggressive bids for key players who can strengthen their squads. Among the teams under the spotlight is the five-time champion Mumbai Indians (MI), who last lifted the trophy in 2020. Determined to end their title drought, MI is reportedly eyeing the return of Sunrisers Hyderabad’s Ishan Kishan, a former MI player, as they prepare for the next phase of their team’s evolution.
Ishan Kishan In High Demand
As per a report from the Times of India, the Mumbai Indians are leading the race to bring back Kishan, who remains one of the most dynamic wicketkeeper-batters in Indian cricket. Several franchises, including Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Rajasthan Royals (RR), have also expressed interest in securing his services. However, MI’s pursuit appears the strongest, with discussions reportedly already initiated with the player, although no final decision has been made.
Kishan’s appeal lies not just in his aggressive batting but also in his versatility as a wicketkeeper and opener. While South Africa’s Ryan Rickelton impressed as MI’s wicketkeeper-opener in IPL 2025, Kishan’s Indian nationality offers a tactical advantage—allowing MI greater flexibility in fielding their four overseas players. The team’s management reportedly views this move as part of their preparation for life after Rohit Sharma, who, at 38, is approaching the twilight of his IPL career.
Upcoming Auction And Team Dynamics
While the final word on the auction details is yet to be officially announced, the November 15 retention deadline has added urgency to the teams’ planning. Franchises must finalise which players they intend to keep before entering the bidding war in December. The IPL 2026 auction holds particular importance for several franchises beyond MI.
Defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) will aim to build on their historic maiden title win last season under the captaincy of Rajat Patidar, who succeeded Faf du Plessis. Meanwhile, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) face crucial rebuilding phases after finishing last and second-last, respectively, in the previous season. With powerhouses restructuring and young stars like Kishan in demand, the upcoming IPL auction promises to be one of the most intriguing in recent years.
