The ICC has responded to BCCI’s request to not acknowledge the Kashmir Premier League as it will be played in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir which is a reason of tension between India and Pakistan. An ICC official has come out with a statement saying that the body has disregarded the tournament from being in their jurisdiction. This comes as good news for the BCCI who strongly opposed the league from getting an ICC certification.

An ICC spokesperson while talking to Pakistan’s Geo TV said: “The tournament is not under ICC’s jurisdiction as it is not an international cricket tournament.”

The Kashmir Premier League, organised by the Pakistan Cricket Board is scheduled to start from August 6. It will see former Pakistan skippers Shahid Afridi and Shoaib Malik play for different teams in the tournament. Muzaffarabad cricket stadium in PoK will host the matches of the league with a total of six teams participating in the tournament.

Previously a report in ESPN Cricinfo stated the reason behind BCCI’s call to boycott the tournament. The report centered around the status of Kashmir being a territory of dispute between the countries since 1947 after the Indian independence.

“The basis of the BCCI’s complaint seems to centre around the status of Kashmir as disputed territory – and whether matches can be played in such territories – and its central place in the long-running dispute between the two countries. The status of Kashmir has been the cause of several wars between India and Pakistan from the moment India gained independence and Pakistan was created in 1947. Both countries control parts of the region but govern it separately. Political and diplomatic ties between the two countries have fluctuated over the years, and are currently going through a prolonged low,” Cricinfo’s report said.
