There are a few rivalries across world sport that invoke passion that known no bounds. When it comes to cricket, the Ashes come to mind. The longest-running rivalry in the game, steeped in tradition, is one keenly watched by fans across the globe.
Another such clash is when India and Pakistan face each other. Given the political nature of this contest, the on-field rivalry is complemented by the off-field tension and drama around the match.
The fact that the neighbour countries no longer play bilateral matches, when they do end up coming face to face in ICC tournaments, it becomes the most anticipated and mouthwatering match of the year. There is no other contest that can grab the number of eyeballs that this rivalry does.
Not many Englishmen and Aussies will, however, agree to the Ashes being an inferior rivalry. Michael Vaughan happened to do just that.
“I think, we being England and Australia ex-players, we all kind of think of the Ashes as the biggest game in world cricket, it’s not! India vs Pakistan is the biggest game. Looking forward to Rohit Sharma being the captain, probably the first time he’s going to be under real pressure. It’s going to be an epic event,” Michael Vaughan said on a Star Sports show.
The ICC recently announced the fixture list for the men’s T20 World Cup 2022, slated to take place in Australia from October 16 to November 13. The euphoria amongst fans was on expected lines when it was revealed that India will be taking on Pakistan in their opening game at the T20 World Cup 2022. The match is set to take place at the iconic MCG.
India were beaten comprehensively the last time these two teams faced each other. It was also the first time ever that Pakistan had beaten India in a World Cup game.
India would be fired up for the game against Pakistan – Adam Gilchrist
Adam Gilchrist, the former Australian wicketkeeper-batsman, feels that India would particularly be fired up for the game after the loss last time.
“Huge rivalry. We all know about that. India will be particularly fired up given what happened back in November where Pakistan registered a 10-wicket victory. So, the rivalry just grows and what a venue to have,” said Gilchrist.
