Kolkata Knight Riders appointed a World Cup-winning skipper Eoin Morgan to lead the side in IPL 2020. However, former Indian batsman Aakash Chopra wants youngster Shubman Gill to lead the side in the next IPL season.

KKR coach Brendon McCullum said that Gill was a part of the leadership group and now Chopra wants him to be elevated as KKR captain. He has given valid enough reasons behind his call and said that this KKR can be a long-term approach for the franchise.

Shubman Gill should lead KKR in IPL 2021 – Aakash Chopra

In a video uploaded on his YouTube page, Aakash Chopra said has suggested the two-time champions to let go of Morgan and make young Shubman Gill the captain of the side. He further said that Eoin Morgan should not be retained by KKR in the mega-auction which makes a case for Gill to lead the side. Aakash Chopra cited the example of Shreyas Iyer leading the Delhi Capitals and changing their fortunes.

“Retain Shubman Gill, Varun Chakravarthy, and Andre Russell and make Gill the captain. The way Delhi Capitals did with Shreyas Iyer, gave him a strong coaching staff and groomed him for a better future.

KKR should not let go of Gill if they feel he is captaincy material as he might get into some other team and in the coming years he might replicate what Rohit Sharma has done for Mumbai Indians,” said Chopra in a video on his YouTube channel.

Aakash Chopra further said that Eoin Morgan can be brought back using the Right To Match card but making young batting sensation Shubman Gill the leader of the side is the best possible option.

“KKR have a very young and exciting talent in their hand in the form of Gill and they should make him the captain if they see leadership qualities in him. Not a great idea to make Eoin Morgan the captain and he should be released. He can be bought back through RTM if KKR want him,” he added.

KKR won out of their first seven matches under the leadership of Dinesh Karthik. Under Morgan, they won three and finished fifth on the points table. While all the talk was about Karthik focusing on his batting after giving up the captaincy, he scored just 169 runs from 14 games at 14.08.

Meanwhile, Eoin Morgan ended IPL 2020 as the second-highest run-scorer for KKR. He scored 418 runs from 14 games averaging above 40 and striking at 138.41. Shubman Gill was the top-scorer of the side with 470 runs from 14 games.
