Asia Cup 2023: Rohit Sharma’s Dismissal Against Pakistan Was Due To A Regrettable Shot Choice, Leading To His Disappointment, Says Former India Opener

Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill formed an explosive 121-run partnership in the Asia Cup 2023 Super Four match against Pakistan. In the third match of the Super Four stage in the Asia Cup 2023, Babar Azam chose to field against India in Colombo.

Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill aggressively took on the Pakistani fast bowlers, reminiscent of the times when Virender Sehwag would open the innings and dominate the opposition with his exceptional range of shots.

While Shubman attacked the bowlers right from the beginning, Rohit was more patient before unleashing his shots. Together, they built a formidable 121-run partnership for the first wicket in just 17 overs, setting India up for a substantial total.

However, Rohit, who had scored a dynamic 56 off 49 balls, was dismissed by leg-spinner Shadab Khan when he mistimed a seemingly easy delivery to the long-off fielder.

Rohit Sharma’s poor shot led to his dismissal against Pakistan

Gautam Gambhir, Rohit’s ex-teammate, criticized the India captain’s “awful shot,” which allowed Pakistan to make a comeback after India’s initial dominance.

“I feel he will be extremely disappointed. The way Rohit Sharma got out, it was an extremely bad shot. He himself knows that shot deserves to be criticized because Pakistan were down and out at that stage,” Gambhir said while reviewing the day’s play on Star Sports.

“At one point, it seemed India might score 370-375. Rohit Sharma played a bad shot and Shubman Gill got out in the very next over.”

“You don’t want to give even the slightest window to a bowling attack like Pakistan. You gave a window and you played that shot against the bowler you had hit for 30 runs in two overs.”

“If it had been a bowler who had been bowling well, it would have been alright as you were under pressure. If you had just stood there, he would have given you one or two bad balls every over,” the southpaw added.

The weather was unfavorable on September 10, allowing for only 24.1 overs of play. Thankfully, there’s a reserve day, and the match will continue on September 11, with India positioned at 147/2.
