Former Indian batsman Aakash Chopra has said that Kings XI Punjab should not retain Universe Boss Chris Gayle in the next IPL auction. The BCCI has said that there will be a full auction ahead of IPL 2021 and Chopra believes that the franchise should not retain the senior batsman who is catching up with age.

In a recently released video, the former Indian batsman has spoken about the options that the franchise has got into the big auction. Incidentally, Chopra had earlier revealed the list of 3 players Chennai Super Kings should release ahead of IPL 2021.

Aakash Chopra suggested that Kings XI Punjab should look to retain KL Rahul, Mayank Agarwal, Nicholas Pooran and Mohammed Shami in the upcoming auction. Regarding Gayle, he said that They should look at how long can he deliver with age catching upon him.

“They will have to think about Chris Gayle, if they can think about him for the next IPL or the IPL after that. Because if it is a mega-auction, which is a possibility, then you will have to start thinking ahead that who will stay with you for the next three years.” Aakash Chopra said.

The former Indian batsman also spoke on KXIP’s death bowling concerns ahead of the mega auction. Aakash Chopra said death bowling is one of the areas that the franchise should look to cover in the upcoming auction.

“If you do not get the death bowling, then your problem will remain. Kings XI Punjab did recover later on but in the first 7 matches they were conceding 54 runs on an average in the last 3 overs. How will you win matches if you keep on doing that?” he added.

Chopra concluded by pointing out KXIP’s need of a solid middle-order batsman with Glenn Maxwell failing for the franchise in a year when he was paid the big bucks.

“So they will have to hire overseas recruits there, somehow get them into the team, however expensive they might be. If they can get a middle-order batsman instead of Maxwell, they should go for him.” he signed off.
