The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 semi-final between India and Australia at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium witnessed an electrifying moment when Australia’s young left-arm spinner, Cooper Connolly, claimed his maiden ODI wicket. His prized scalp? None other than Indian captain Rohit Sharma, a modern-day cricketing giant.
Rohit Sharma’s Eventful Start
The match began with Rohit Sharma getting a few lucky escapes early in his innings. On the third ball of the second over, bowled by Nathan Ellis, Rohit attempted a cut shot but sent it straight to Cooper Connolly at point. Connolly, playing his first match in the tournament, failed to latch onto the catch, giving Rohit an early reprieve when he was on 13 (8). Just four balls later, Marnus Labuschagne dropped another chance, further extending Rohit’s stay at the crease.
Contrasts with the 2023 World Cup Final
Unlike the 2023 ODI World Cup final where Travis Head’s incredible catch had dismissed Rohit early, this time the Indian captain seemed to have fortune on his side. However, Australia kept the pressure on, waiting for an opportunity to strike back.
The Moment of Magic: Connolly vs Rohit Sharma
Connolly had a rough start in the first innings, scoring a nine-ball duck while struggling against Mohammed Shami. Despite this, he was given a crucial role in the bowling attack as Australia sought breakthroughs.

In the eighth over of India’s chase, Australia’s captain Steve Smith handed the ball to Cooper Connolly. On the fifth delivery of the over, Connolly bowled a full, straight ball targeting the stumps.
Rohit Sharma, who had already survived two dropped catches, attempted a slog sweep but missed the ball completely. The delivery struck him on the pads, leading to a loud appeal from the Australians. Umpire Chris Gaffaney raised his finger immediately, sending Rohit into contemplation.
In slow motion, Head’s ecstatic reaction was captured as the Australian team rallied around Connolly to celebrate the crucial wicket, leaving the Indian fans in Dubai stunned into silence.
The DRS Review and Confirmation
Rohit opted for a DRS review, hoping for a reprieve. Replays, however, showed that the ball was crashing into the leg stump, confirming the on-field decision. The review showed three reds, meaning Rohit had to walk back to the pavilion. He departed after scoring 28 runs off 29 balls, including four boundaries.
Shubman Gill was dismissed for just 8 (11), chopping one onto his stumps. With Rohit’s dismissal following soon after, India was suddenly in a vulnerable position.

Earlier in the day, Mohammed Shami starred with three wickets as India did well to restrict Australia to 264. Steve Smith’s composed 73 and Alex Carey’s brisk 61 helped the reigning champions post a competitive total on a tricky Dubai pitch.
