Do It For The Legends: Dhumal Wants 2027 Trophy for Kohli and Rohit

IPL chairman Arun Dhumal has urged the Indian cricket team to target the 2027 ODI World Cup as a tribute to senior stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Drawing parallels with India’s historic 2011 triumph, Dhumal said the current generation should aim to do for Kohli what the team did for Sachin Tendulkar.

He reminded fans how the MS Dhoni-led side rallied together to deliver Tendulkar his long-awaited World Cup moment, an achievement that remains one of Indian cricket’s most emotional milestones. According to Dhumal, the same collective hunger and unity can once again drive India to the top on the world stage.

Praise for Kohli and Rohit’s Enduring Impact

Speaking about Kohli, Dhumal underlined his unmatched contribution across formats, calling him one of India’s finest ever. He highlighted that Kohli was already part of the 2011 winning squad, while Rohit Sharma missed that tournament and is still chasing his first World Cup title. Reflecting on Rohit’s journey, Dhumal noted how perseverance shaped his career, saying it took time for him to cement his place but once he did, he turned into a “rockstar” of white-ball cricket.

Emphasising faith in the duo, Dhumal stated, “As long as they are performing the way they are, there should be no question marks about their future.” The remark underlines the belief that form and fitness, rather than age, should determine selection for marquee tournaments.

Road Ahead and World Cup Vision

Dhumal also touched upon India’s immediate roadmap, pointing out that Kohli and Rohit are expected to feature in domestic cricket, including the Vijay Hazare Trophy, before India’s upcoming ODI assignments, such as the series against New Zealand. He suggested that continued involvement at different levels will help maintain match readiness and hunger.

Reiterating his broader message, Dhumal said the dream of 2027 should inspire the entire squad, blending youth and experience into a unified mission. Just as 2011 became a story of fulfilment for Tendulkar, he hopes 2027 can become a defining chapter for Kohli and Rohit—one that rewards their longevity, leadership and immense service to Indian cricket.
