India’s bowlers ensured that they have the initiative and the advantage on day one of the first Test in Nottingham on Wednesday. Jasprit Bumrah took four wickets and led the bowling attack as England’s batting collapse meant that they registered a below-par first innings total on good batting conditions. More about day 1 match report in detail below.

England won the toss and opted to bat first. However, they did not have the best of starts with Rory Burns getting dismissed in the first over for a duck. Dom Sibly (18) and Zak Crawley (27) got starts with Crawley getting dismissed just before lunch as England took the break at 61/2. In the post-lunch session, Root went past yet another Test fifty and added a valuable 72-run stand with Jonny Bairstow who is playing his 75th Test match.

Meanwhile, the Indian bowlers turned the match around in the final session of the day picking up six wickets and bowling England out below 200. From 138/4, England were bowled out for 183 runs with Root playing a lone hand. Four of the England batters including Jos Buttler and Burns scored a duck. This hampered England’s chances of putting up a good first innings score.

Meanwhile, the selection of Ravindra Jadeja over Ravichandran Ashwin in the Indian playing XI had the cricket fraternity talking.
