Day 2 of the first Test between Indian and England in Trent Bridge belonged to James Anderson. In a matter of an over he took advantage from India’s hands and brought a 360-degree change into the game. Just when he looked good for more, rain played spoilsport and the umpires had to call off the day due to persistent rain since the second half. More about day 2 report in detail below. 

India started the day on 21 for no loss as KL Rahul (57*) and Rohit Sharma (36) went onto add 97 runs for the first wicket. This is India’s best opening stand against England in England since 2007. India, unfortunately, lost Rohit at the stroke of lunch with Ollie Robinson getting him caught in the fine-leg boundary.

The second session started exactly how England wanted and India did not. In the 41st over of the Indian innings, James Anderson first dismissed Cheteshwar Pujara (4) and then dismissed Virat Kohli in the very next delivery. This was the first time Anderson dismissed Kohli in England since the 2014 tour.

Problems mounted for India when Ajinkya Rahane was run-out after a mix-up with KL Rahul who ended the day on 57 unbeaten. The England bowlers bowled consistently well throughout the first session. It was their consistency that resulted in a wicket just before team which helped James Anderson break through the Indian middle-order. 

Anderson was at his lethal best in the spell in which he dismissed Pujara and Kohli. He got the ball to swing both ways and beat both the edges of the bat. Stuart Broad and Robinson bowled well in pairs and gave Anderson much-needed breaks in between. Sam Curran also bowled a spell of seven overs for 25 runs. 

James Anderson took his wickets tally in Tests to 619 and equalled Anil Kumble in the process. he already is the highest wicket-taker in Test cricket among the pace bowlers in Test cricket. It was Anderson’s single-handed effort that placed England in the driver’s eat at the close of play on day 2.
