Team India stand a chance of taking a lead in the five-match Test series on the final day of the first Test in Trent Bridge. They need 157 more runs with nine wickets remaining chasing a target of 209 to win. After Joe Root scored his 21st Test ton and kept England ahead in the first two session, the Indian bowlers struck back to bowl out England for 303 in their second session. More about the report in detail below.
Having started their day on 25/no loss England rode on Joe Root’s marvellous ton to score 303 in their second innings. Root formed key partnerships with the rest of the batsmen. Contributions from Dom Sibley (28), Jonny Bairstow (30), Daniel Lawrence (25) and Sam Curran helped England get to that score.

On the other hand, Jasprit Bumrah picked up a fifer to go with his four wickets in the first innings to bring India back into the game. He took five wickets including the key wicket of Root. Rishabh Pant, behind the stumps, took four catches in the second innings to go with his three in the first. Mohammed Shami picked up three wickets as Shardul Thakur and Siraj picked three wickets between themselves.
Set to chase 209, Indian openers KL Rahul (26) and Rohit Sharma (12) added 34 before Broad dismissed Rahul late in the day to give India their first blow in pursuit of the target.
India won their last Test in Nottingham in their previous series. India’s only Test series win against England also came at this venue under Rahul Dravid. Once again, on the final day, India stand a chance of taking a lead in the series in search of their elusive series win. Thus the final day’s play is well poised for an Indian win.
India 278 & 52/1 (KL Rahul 26, Stuart Broad 1-18) need another 157 to win against England 183 & 303 (Joe Root 109, Jasprit Bumrah 5-64).
