The Indian team is going to have a new opening pair for the upcoming series against England. Mayank Agarwal is all set to open the batting with Rohit Sharma. After the WTC Final India’s first-choice opener Shubhman Gill was injured. His absence has created a vacancy at the top.
The team management wanted Prithvi Shaw and Devdutt Padikkal to be flown to England for the Test series. But the BCCI denied this request.
“When Prithvi Shaw was not considered in the pool of 24 players who travelled, why should it be any different now,” quoted a BCCI source.
BCCI wants a talent like Prithvi Shaw to put in the hard yards in domestic cricket. A BCCI source said that it would not make sense if Shaw was made to warm the bench in England. They want him to play well in the Sri Lanka series.
India also have KL Rahul and Abhimanyu Easwaran in the squad
Cheteshwar Pujara also has experience when it comes to opening the batting but it is unlikely that his position will be changed. Rohit and Mayank did the opening duties during the 2019/20 home season, where India dominated South Africa and Bangladesh. Mayank opened with Shaw in New Zealand, in 2020, after an injury to the senior player.
Mayank Agarwal has not opened the innings since Rohit Sharma has started opening in Test cricket. After the WTC Final, India will be seen taking on England in a five-match Test series starting on August 4. They will be motivated to bounce back after the final. It will be interesting to see the changes India will make in the playing 11 for the series against England.
