ENG vs IND: Jasprit Bumrah’s Fifer Hand India Slim First-Innings Lead In The 1st Test

In the first Test against England at Headingley, Leeds, Jasprit Bumrah delivered a stellar performance with the ball, spearheading India’s bowling attack almost single-handedly. His remarkable five-wicket haul (5/83 in 24.4 overs) proved to be the turning point, allowing India to edge past England by a slender six-run margin in the first innings.

Despite little support from the rest of the bowling unit, Bumrah’s precise line, pace variations, and relentless intensity rattled the English batting order, ultimately bowling them out for 465 runs on Day 3.

Matching Legends and Setting New Records

With this feat, Bumrah achieved his 14th five-wicket haul in Test cricket, 12 of which have come in overseas conditions — a testament to his prowess outside India. Notably, this performance helped him equal the legendary Kapil Dev’s record for the most five-wicket hauls in away Tests by an Indian pacer.

The achievement further cements Bumrah’s status as a modern-day great and one of India’s most effective fast bowlers in foreign conditions.

Dominating the SENA Record Books

Bumrah’s brilliance in Leeds also marked a historic milestone on the international stage. During the match, he surpassed Pakistan great Wasim Akram’s record to become the highest wicket-taking Asian bowler in SENA countries — South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia.

Bumrah’s tally now stands at 150 wickets in these challenging conditions, four more than Akram. This milestone highlights Bumrah’s consistency and adaptability across various terrains and opponents, underlining his importance to India’s success abroad.

Jasprit Bumrah’s five-wicket burst not only handed India a psychological edge in the opening Test but also reinforced his stature as a world-class bowler capable of delivering match-defining performances under pressure.
