England pacer Josh Tongue has expressed strong optimism as his team prepares to chase down a steep target on the final day of the first Test against India at Headingley. With 350 runs needed for victory, Tongue made it clear that England’s approach would be nothing short of aggressive.

He stated that the team had no plans of playing for a draw and would go all out to win the game. The fast bowler added that with England’s powerful batting lineup and fearless mindset, there is a strong belief in the dressing room that the target is achievable.

Momentum Shift with Late Wickets

India had put up a solid total of 364 in their second innings, thanks to centuries by KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant. However, it was Josh Tongue who brought England right back into the contest with a brilliant spell, claiming three wickets in just four balls.

This sudden collapse of India’s tail-end gave England a much-needed breakthrough and shifted the momentum in their favour going into the final day. If England succeeds in chasing the target, it will be their second-highest run chase in Test history, narrowly behind their 378-run chase against India at Edgbaston in 2022.

Both Camps Expect High-Stakes Finish

Speaking about England’s approach, Tongue confirmed that the only message within the team is to win the match. He admitted that the Indian bowlers pose a strong threat, but insisted that England’s batsmen are ready for the challenge.

On the other side, Indian batsman KL Rahul echoed a similar mindset, stating that even India is not considering a draw. Rahul described the pitch as challenging, with inconsistent bounce and sharp turn, and said it could pose difficulties for England’s attacking style.

While confident in his team’s chances, he also warned that aggressive batting could be risky on such a surface. He praised Rishabh Pant’s fearless century, calling him a unique player who thrives under pressure and stays true to his natural game.
