England started their preparations for the 2021 T20 World Cup in style. They’re arguably the strongest team in the limited-overs format and were able to stamp their authority in the first T20I against Sri Lanka. Although they missed two of their star players, Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer, England had a field day beating their opponents by 8 wickets.
Having opted to bat first, the Lankans weren’t able to justify their skipper’s decision and were restricted to a below-par total of 129/7. Although it wasn’t the easiest of surfaces to bat on, lack of application, saw Sri Lanka put up a rather pitiful performance.
Jason Roy and Jos Buttler made short work of the chase, with the latter taking England home with an unbeaten 68* at the Sophia Gardens. Come Thursday, the Lankans will be hoping to put up a much better fight in the match. England on the other hand have a chance to test their bench strength – after all this is preparation for the T20 World Cup.
