The outbreak of the coronavirus has had a massive impact on human lives killing over 3.5 lakhs of people across the globe. And now, former Pakistan cricketer Taufeeq Umar has been tested positive for the deadly coronavirus.
The pandemic has left the sporting calendar shattered with several major events across the world getting postponed or cancelled. So far, a number of top footballers have tested positive for COVID-19 but Taufeeq Umar’s case is the first major one in the cricketing fraternity. As per reports in Cricket Pakistan, he is currently in self-isolation in his home.
Taufeeq Umar tested positive of coronavirus
The swift left-handed opener Umar made an instant impact on his debut against Bangladesh in 2001. He played a brilliant knock of 104 runs off 163 deliveries to help Pakistan register a comprehensive victory by an innings and 264 runs. Since then, Umar represented Pakistan in 44 Tests and 22 ODIs for Pakistan amassing 2963 runs and 504 runs in the two formats respectively. He has seven centuries and 14 half-centuries to his name in red-ball career.
Taufeeq Umar formed a significant partnership with Imran Nazir and Salman Butt for a brief period. However, he never managed to live up to the expectations due to inconsistency and fitness issues. Umar last played for his country in 2014 in a Test match against New Zealand in Dubai.
The stylish southpaw tried to make a comeback a couple of times but poor form with the bat didn’t do any justice to the talent. He finally announced his international retirement in 2016 to take part in now-defunct Masters Champions League. Meanwhile, his last first-class game came in 2018 for Sui Northern.
