Former England spinner Graeme Swann has finally broken his silence on David Warner being sacked as Sunrisers Hyderabad’s captain. He felt that Warner speaking against the managment’sdecision led to him being removed from the captaincy position and then it was handed over to Kane Williamson. However, Williamson also lost his first game as SRH captain of IPL 2021 against Rajasthan Royals.

Graeme Swann feels David Warner was sacked from captaincy by Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) over his comments on teammate Manish Pandey. Pandey was dropped by SRH for their matches against Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals after struggling to score runs quickly in his first couple of knocks. Warner had termed the decision to drop Pandey from the XI a harsh one from the team management.

Dropping David Warner as Skipper Was a Harsh Call: Graeme Swann

“It was a harsh call in my opinion. But at the end of the day, it is a decision of the selectors to do that,” Warner had said during a post-match press conference when asked for the reason behind dropping Pandey as SRH’s poor run in the tournament continued.

GraemeSwann further said that Warner being sacked from captaincy was more like a punishment to him more than anything else. The southpaw took over as the captain of the side in 2014 and led them to their maiden IPL title in 2016. He also ended up as the highest run-getter for the franchise every season since 2014 and won a few Orange Caps as well.

“It seems like a message has been given to David Warner after that press conference where he passed the buck that this is not my decision but the selectors’. Someone’s not happy about it, and unhappy enough to get rid of him as the skipper and drop him from the team. It looks like punishment to me more than anything,” Swann said on Star Sports.

Sunrisers Hyderabad were placed last on the points table before the IPL 2021 was suspended by the BCCI.
