Former cricketer Sunil Gavaskar feels Hardik Pandya should be the next Indian skipper in the T20 format. The all-rounder has been in good touch for India post his comeback in white-ball cricket. Hardik had a great Indian Premier League season this year, leading the Gujarat Titans to their maiden win. Since then, his name has been doing rounds as a captaincy candidate.

Following his heroics for the Gujarat Titans, Hardik Pandya was made the vice-captain of the Indian team for the South Africa series. He also lead the team against Ireland earlier this year. Recently, the Board of Control for Cricket in India announced, the all-rounder as the captain of the T20I team for the New Zealand tour.

Former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar feels Hardik Pandya should be the next full-time T20 captain for India. He said on India Today,

“Yes, he (Hardik Pandya) should be the next India captain as far as T20 cricket is concerned.”

There will be some retirements, you never know: Sunil Gavaskar

Former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar further expressed that some of the senior players might retire from the T20 format following India’s exit from the 2022 T20 World Cup. The next T20 World Cup will be in 2024, with the West Indies and the United States of America as the hosts. Several Indian players, who are above 30 might not be playing till then. Gavaskar said,

“Having won the Indian Premier League on his first assignment as the captain, they would have marked Hardik Pandya out as the next captain. Hardik Pandya will definitely take over the team in the future and there will be some retirements, you never know. Players will be giving it a lot of thought. There are several players in their mid-30s who will be reconsidering their position in the Indian T20I team.”
