Former Australian skipper Michael Clarke has shown faith in Team India skipper Rohit Sharma’s leadership skills. He expressed that he likes Rohit Sharma’s aggressive approach as a captain. Following Team India’s defeat in the World Test Championship final, Rohit Sharma’s captaincy came under scrutiny. There have been speculations about revamped Test squad, with senior players to be shown the door.
In an interview with RevSports, Michael Clarke expressed that Rohit Sharma is a good captain. He highlighted the Indian skipper’s record for the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League. The right-handed batter has led the Mumbai Indians to five Indian Premier League titles. It is a joint record with the Chennai Super Kings for the most title wins. Clarke added that India’s loss in the one-off World Test Championship final doesn’t make Rohit a bad captain.
“I would be keeping the faith with Rohit, he is a very good captain. I like his aggressive approach; he looks to be as positive as he can be. He has had a lot of success as a leader. Look at his IPL record for Mumbai (Indians). Just because India didn’t win the Test World Championship doesn’t mean Rohit is not the right guy to lead India.”
“The fact that India qualified again, they are the only team to make consecutive finals, says a lot about how they have played their Test cricket over the past four years. It is also a very important time for stability with the One-Day World Cup right around the corner,” he added.
To make consecutive finals isn’t easy: Michael Clarke
Team India lost the World Test Championship final by 209 runs against Australia at the Kennington Oval in London. This was their second consecutive loss in the final of the World Test Championship. They lost to New Zealand at The Rose Bowl in the inaugural cycle. Former cricketer Michael Clarke further expressed that it is not easy to reach finals in consecutive cycles.
“He has done well as a batter as well. Think of his hundred in the last series. Losing a one-off final doesn’t make him a bad captain and nor does it make India a bad team. To make consecutive finals isn’t easy. What it means is that India was the only team to play consistently well over a period of four years. To do so in Test cricket is commendable and I would urge you to look at that as well before making any kind of judgment call,” he said.
