The fourth match of the ongoing red-ball series between India and England kicked off on February 23 at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi. Before the Test, the BCCI declared that Jasprit Bumrah, the ace pacer and vice captain, would be sitting out, citing the need for workload management.

This decision paved the way for the debut of young pacer Akash Deep, who received his first call-up to the team. Akash Deep, led by Rohit Sharma, was handed his India cap by head coach Rahul Dravid before the toss, a moment that signified the realization of his dreams.

His mother’s presence on the field added to the emotional scene, as they shared a heartwarming moment of blessings and affection.

Winning the toss, England’s skipper Ben Stokes chose to put India in to bowl first. Mohammed Siraj spearheaded India’s pace attack, with Akash Deep taking the reins from the other end. In the early stages of his second over, Akash Deep benefited from seam movement and favourable morning conditions, dismissing Zak Crawley as the ball sneaked through the bat-pad gap.

However, his joy was short-lived as the umpire’s call of a no-ball signalled a setback. During the initial five overs, the English batsmen adopted a cautious approach, navigating the challenge posed by the pace duo. As the ball aged, the focus shifted to England’s intent to unleash their aggressive batting style.

The anticipation grew regarding whether Crawley and Ben Duckett could withstand the first session of Day 1 or if the Indian bowlers would capitalize and claim a wicket or two to assert their dominance.
