Team India management is in favour of roping in young batsman Shreyas Iyer in place of Rohit Sharma for the upcoming Test series against Australia. Incidentally, Rohit is reportedly set to miss the action in the upcoming Test series due to the hamstring injury he suffered in IPL 2020.
Initially, Rohit was not named in any of the three squads when the BCCI announced the team last month. The batsman was nursing a hamstring injury and the selectors decided against including him in the squads. He, however, returned to action soon for Mumbai Indians and was later included in the Test squad. The right-handed batsman was not included in the limited-overs squad as a precautionary measure.
Rohit Sharma returned to India and joined the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru to begin his rehabilitation. However, according to a report in Mumbai Mirror, neither he nor pacer Ishant Sharma have achieved the level of fitness to be allowed to join the team in Australia.
Shreyas Iyer likely to replace Rohit Sharma
The swashbuckling batsman needs to reach Australia as early as possible because of 14-days quarantine period to be available for the Test series which starts from December 17. However, the report states that he is nowhere close to regaining full fitness and is very much likely to miss the series Down Under.

Meanwhile, according to a report in InsideSport, the team-management wants Shreyas Iyer as the replacement if Rohit Sharma is ruled out. Iyer is already in Australia for the limited-overs series. The right-handed batsman is yet to make his debut in the red-ball format but boasts a good record in first-class cricket.
Shreyas Iyer has amassed 4592 runs at an average of more than 52 with the help of 12 centuries and 23 fifties from 54 games. Incidentally, India will also miss Virat Kohli in the last three Tests as he and his wife Anushka Sharma are expecting the birth of their first child.
