The Chennai Super Kings will take on the Mumbai Indians in Match 59 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 on Thursday at the Wankhede Stadium. Both the teams rank in the bottom two on the points table for the 2022 season.

The upcoming match will be crucial to decide the fate of the Chennai Super Kings in the qualification race for the playoff spot. They currently rank ninth on the points table with eight points from eleven matches. Chennai began the season on a disastrous note, losing their first four matches of the season. However, they have made a decent comeback, to keep themselves alive in the tournament.

Ahead of the Mumbai Indians match, the Chennai Super Kings have been dealt with a major blow. All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has been ruled out for the remainder of the tournament with an injury. He was the skipper of the franchise at the start of the tournament. However, due to the captaincy pressure, he handed back the captaincy to Dhoni.

The Chennai franchise can still mathematically qualify for the playoffs, thanks to their recent win against the Delhi Capitals by a 91 runs margin. Let’s take a look at the qualification scenario for the Chennai Super Kings.

How can Chennai Super Kings qualify for the playoffs?

The Chennai Super Kings have three matches more in the league stages of the Indian Premier League 2022 season. They will play against the Mumbai Indians, Gujarat Titans, and the Rajasthan Royals in those remaining matches.

Chennai has to win all those three games to stay alive in the competition. This will get them to fourteen points and will also boost their Net Run Rate. They will also have to hope that the Royal Challengers Bangalore and the Delhi Capitals lose their remaining fixtures.

Bangalore is already on 14 points, but their negative NRR may cost them a playoffs berth if they lose their remaining matches. On the other hand, Delhi Capitals have 12 points from as many matches and also a positive NRR of 0.210. For Bangalore to sneak past them, Delhi will have to lose its remaining two matches. In case they tie on 14 points, the NRR of the two teams will come into play.
