There was a toss-up between Sam Curran and Moeen but the management decided to go with the experienced all-rounder. That Moeen has retired from Test cricket and focusing entirely on white-ball cricket ensures that he will be available throughout the IPL season.

Talking to Harsha Bhogle after the IPL 2021 final, Dhoni hinted at playing the next IPL season. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah confirmed that the next IPL season will be played in India bringing an end to all speculations.

IPL 2021- MS Dhoni witty reply to Harsha Bhogle asking about his legacy

“Well, I still have left behind (anything). Again I’ve said it before, it depends on BCCI. With two new teams coming in……we have to decide what is good for CSK. It’s not about me being there in top-three or four. It’s about making a strong core to ensure the franchise doesn’t suffer. The core group, we have to have a hard look to see who can contribute for the next 10 years,” Dhoni said.

CSK retaining MS Dhoni is almost confirmed after ESPN Cricinfo released the list of players likely to be retained by the respective franchises. It has names of all players who are going to be retained by the 8 franchises.

According to the rules laid by the BCCI, each existing team was allowed to retain up to four players. The four players could include, two Indians and two overseas, or three Indians and one overseas. The teams were allowed to retain two uncapped players. Each team was allocated a salary purse of 90 crores, however, after retaining four players CSK have a remaining salary purse of 48 crores. The mega-auctions are likely to be held in December this year.
